The St. Lawrence County Soil and Water Conservation District is now taking orders for its annual fish program. Available are largemouth bass, brook trout, rainbow trout, and channel catfish.

These fish average about five inches long. Prices range from $175 to $250 per hundred, depending on the species.

Minimum order is 25 fish. Fathead minnows are also available as feed at a lower cost. Minnows also eat mosquito larvae.

Trout will do best in cold ponds. Rainbow may grow up to 24 inches and can weigh up to three pounds. Rainbows are larger, but brooks are more aggressive.

The largemouth bass do well in warmer ponds. They may grow up to 19 inches and can weigh up to five pounds. Bass require eight pounds of food to gain one pound of body weight.

Channel catfish which won’t stir up the bottom can get up to 10 pounds and will tolerate a wide range of water temperature.

Orders are being taken until Sept. 25, with pick-up on Oct. 2 at the SLC SWCD office. Proceeds of these sales benefit conservation projects in the county. The Soil and Water Conservation District has been serving county residents since 1957.

The SWCD office is currently closed to the public. Call (315) 386-3582, email conservation@slcswcd.org, or mail SLC SWCD 1942 Old DeKalb Road, Canton, NY 13617 orders or questions.

Forms are also available on www.slcswcd.org. They are also on Facebook and post updates on this and other Soil and Water programs.
