St. Lawrence County school voters decide budgets, board members, propositions on Tuesday

Voters will head to the polls Tuesday to vote on budgets, elections and propositions at all St. Lawrence County schools.

Below is a list of schools in the area that includes budget information and voting day details.

Potsdam Central School District

Potsdam Central School District voters will be asked to approve a $35,815,351 budget for the 2021-22 school year that includes a 1.58% tax levy increase and raises $14,167,364 for the district.

The school is also asking voters to approve the purchase of three new buses.

There are three seats open on the school board with two people running. James Hubbard and Joshua Fiske are the candidates.

Voting is from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the high school auditorium.

Canton Central School District

Canton Central School District voters will determine the fate of the $33,107,411 2021-22 budget which will raise the tax levy 2.9% and raise $10,449,000 for the district.

Also on the ballot is a proposition to approve a $27.5M capital project and a proposition to purchase three buses.

The project will renovate all three cafeteria lines and the two kitchens. The project will replace the pool which is now over 50 years old. It will be relocated to an area that does not present a leak threat to electrical infrastructure and it will be designed to eliminate the corrosive effect that the pool filtration system has on the building’s infrastructure. CTE classroom and learning labs/shops will be renovated for better safety and to meet the needs of current technology. The auditorium will see upgrades on the curtain control system and safety upgrades to the lighting control system.

Additionally, the capital project, if approved, will replace existing, original water and sanitary lines as well as the remaining original brick lined manholes. The parking surfaces will be rebuilt and an additional parking lot will be constructed.

The soccer field will be relocated to the behind the building where a lighted, multi-purpose artificial turf field will be constructed.

The project also proposes renovations to the Banford School and High School offices for security.

Voters will also choose five school board members from a pool of seven candidates. They include Victor N. Rycroft, Robert E. Larrabee, Andrew S. Moses, Susan M. Grandaw, Kate Halleron Murphy, Wendy Todd and Christopher Marquart.

Voting is slated for noon to 8 p.m. in the high school library.

Norwood-Norfolk Central

Norwood-Norfolk Central School District is presenting taxpayers with a $24,834,944 2021-22 budget that keeps that tax levy flat and raises $6,534,756 for the district.

Also, voters will be asked to approve the purchase of the three school buses.

Four candidates will vie for three spots on the board of education. Running for open seats are Kurt Fetter, Rob Barlow, James Dillon and Stephen Markum.

Voting is set for 12:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the district office.

Clifton-Fine Central

Clifton-Fine Central School will present taxpayers with an $11,345,218 2021-22 budget that includes a .02% tax levy increase that raises $4,332,178 for the district.

Voters will choose who fills three vacant seats on the school board. The candidates are Jenny Thompson, John Perrault and Lynne Backus.

Voting takes place from noon to 8 p.m. on the main lobby.

Colton-Pierrepont Central

District voters here will vote on a $11,105,716 budget that include a 1.66% tax levy increase that raises $7,840,259 for the school.

A proposition will look to amend the capital reserve limit from $4,000,000 to $7,500,000. Another proposition will ask voters to approve a tax levy increase for the Colton Hepburn Library for $5,000 in addition to the current annual appropriation of $25,000, for a total of $30,000 annual.

Lastly, voters will be asked to fill one vacant seat on the school board. The only listed candidate is Scott Baxter.

Taxpayers can vote in the school auditorium lobby from noon to 8 p.m.

Edwards-Knox Central

Edwards-Knox Central School District voters will determine the fate of the school’s $16,690,000 2021-22 budget which not raise the tax levy will generate $1,985,312 for the district.

Voters will also be asked to approve the purchase of three buses.

Finally, voters will choose between five candidates to fill three vacant seats on the board of education. The candidates are Penny Allen, Craig Kirkpatrick, Dustin Lottie, Andrew Ames, and Roger (RJ) Tresidder.

Voting is from noon to 8 p.m. in the main gymnasium.

Hermon-DeKalb Central

The Hermon-DeKalb Central School District is presenting voters with a $12,876,705 2021-22 budget that will see no increase to the tax levy while raising $2,614,345 for the district.

Voters will be asked to approve a proposition for the purchase of new school buses, as well as elect a board of education member. The only name on the ballot running for school board will be Anne Williams.

Voters can cast their ballot in the main lobby and cafeteria area from 1-8 p.m.

Madrid-Waddington Central

Voters in the Madrid-Waddington School District will determine the fate of the $18,187,232 2021-22 budget that includes a tax levy increase of 2% and raises $4,614,825 for the district

Voters will be asked to approve the purchase of two buses and a van.

Also, voters will decide who fills two vacant seats on the board of education. Candidates are Michael Ruddy, Amber Sullivan, Wyatt Boswell and Ethan Ward.

Lastly, voters will be asked to approve a $100,000 capital outlay project for work on the bus garage.

The vote is set for 1-8 p.m. in the school auditorium.

Parishville-Hopkinton Central

Voters in the district here will be asked to approve a $12,354,826 budget for the 2021-22 school year that includes a 1.99% tax levy increase and raises $4,161,858 for the district.

Voters will also be asked to approve the purchase of two buses.

Geri Lynn Wilson is the sole candidate running for one open seat on the school board.

Voting is set for 1-8 p.m. in the school auditorium.

Brasher Falls Central

Taxpayers in the district will vote on the school’s $26,279,357 2021-22 budget which will see a 1% tax levy increase that raises $5,285,934.

Also on the ballot will be a proposition to purchase three buses with a final cost to the district around $34,912.

There is one seat open on the board of education and Courtney Hallahan is running for the seat.

Voting takes place from noon to 8 p.m. in the middle school gym.

Ogdensburg City School

On May 18 Ogdensburg City School District voters will determine the fate of Ogdensburg’s $49,938,000 budget which will have no increase on the $10,598,360 tax levy.

Also on the ballot are several propositions. The first would allow the school to borrow or raise up to $3 million for a capital reserve fund to ensure money is tucked away for specific projects that could come down the pipeline in the near or distant future.

The proposition would allow the district to create a line item to collect such money.

One such initiative that could benefit from the capital reserve fund is tied to another proposition on the ballot that would allow the school to purchase up to 12 buses at a cost not to exceed $1.3 million.

Another proposition for district voters this year is not tied to the school’s current or future budget. It is in fact a proposal that would allow the Ogdensburg Public Library to collect and raise an additional $225,000 from taxpayers to ensure the future of the organization.

Finally voters will choose two new board of education members from a pool of four candidates. Running for school board are Robert Bromley, Renee Grizzuto, James Lafave and Angela McRoberts.

Voting will be from noon to 9 p.m. at the Ogdensburg Free Academy Golden Dome.

Massena Central School

Massena Central School District’s $59.7 million budget will go before voters May 18. The budget keeps the tax levy flat. The Massena budget includes a bus purchase and the capital outlay project but no separate propositions. Voters will also choose two board of education members from a pool of five. Running for the board are Timothy Hayes, Patricia Murphy, Christopher Castell, Angela Frost and Kristy DuBray Baker.

Voting will be held at the Massena Community Center from noon to 8 p.m.

Brasher Falls Central

Taxpayers in the district will vote on the school’s $26,279,357 2021-22 budget which will see a 1% tax levy increase that raises $5,285,934.

Also on the ballot will be a proposition to purchase three buses with a final cost to the district around $34,912.

There is one seat open on the board of education and Courtney Hallahan is running for the seat.

Voting takes place from noon to 8 p.m. in the middle school gym.

Gouverneur Central

Voters in the district will decide on the schools $39,960,574 2021-22 budget that will see a 2.94% tax levy increase that raises $6,686,829 for the district.

Three seats are open on the school board with three candidates running. They are Laurie Roberts, Laura Spicer and Nick Ormasen.

Voting takes place in the high school auditorium from noon to 8 p.m.

Hammond Central School

Voters in Hammond Central School District will be asked to approve a $9,302,473 budget for the 2021-22 school year that includes a 3.19% tax levy increase raising $3,844,694 for the district.

There will be a proposition to change board seats to at large.

Two candidates, Jennifer Gardner and Viviana Wilmont, are running for two vacant school board seats.

Voters can cast their vote in the school cafeteria from 1:30-8 p.m.

Heuvelton Central School

Heuvelton Central School District voters will vote on a $15,222,247 2021-22 budget that will see a 1.89% tax levy increase that raises $3,725,351 for the district.

There are three candidates running to fill one seat on the school board. The candidates are Matthew Pinkerton, Alexa (AJ) Backus, and Michael Blevins.

Voting is from 1-8 p.m. in the Poulton Auditorium.

Lisbon Central School District

Voters in the Lisbon school district will be asked to approve a $15,890,213 school budget for the 2021-22 that includes a 2.78% tax levy increase and raises $3,830,411 for the district.

A proposition will seek approval to purchase 8 buses.

Mary Fonda is running for a seat on the school board, of which there is one vacancy.

Voting takes place from 1-9 p.m. ii the main lobby.

Morristown Central School

Voters in the district here will be asked to approve a $10,953,442 budget for the 2021-22 school year that includes a 1.81% tax levy increase and raises $3,941,155 toward the budget.

Voters will also be asked to approve a proposition to establish a capital reserve fund.

Also, voters will determine who fills three vacant seats on the school board. The only candidate announced as of print was Jeff LaJoy.

Voters can cast their ballot in the school’s main lobby from noon to 8 p.m.
