CANTON -- St. Lawrence County legislators voted to appoint Cynthia Ackerman as Department of Social Services commissioner during their Monday, Aug. 3 meeting.
She will take over later this month at a $109,347 salary.
County Administrator Ruth Doyle said Ackerman has been with Arc of Jefferson-St. Lawrence for "the better part of 17 years."
Legislators spoke highly of Ackerman prior to making the appointment.
“Anyone that would want to take this job in these trying times, God bless you,” said Legislator Dave Forsythe, R-Lisbon. He was a member of the search committee that looked for a new DSS commissioner. "I look forward to her taking the role on and I wish her the best of luck.”
"I'd like to commend the search committee. This was a difficult position to fill. Ms. Ackerman brings a great deal of expertise in working with many kinds of people in a vast area. I think she brings a lot of strengths to this,” said Legislator Jim Reagen, R-Ogdensburg.
Ackerman takes over a position vacated when former commissioner Chris Riedehs retired earlier this year. Heather Wenzel then took over as interim commissioner. She resigned last month.
