Hunters in St. Lawrence County took more black bears, 97, during the 2010 season than any other county in the state, according to state Department of Environmental Conservation figures released this week.
In 2009, the tally in the county was 122 bears.
Broken down by township, the take was one in Canton, four in Clare, two in Clifton, six in Colton, three in DeKalb, eight in Edwards, eight in Fine, 10 in Fowler, six in Gouverneur, two in Hermon, eight in Hopkinton, one in Lawrence, nine in Parishville, nine in Piercefield, two in Pierrepont, eight in Pitcairn, one in Potsdam, and nine in Russell.
In the county, 41 were shot by muzzleloaders during the early muzzleloading season, seven by bowhunters, 15 during the regular muzzleloading season, and 34 during the regular big-game season.
Statewide, hunters took 1,064 black bears in 2010, compared with 1,487 in 2009.
Bear hunting was closed in Wildlife Management Unit 6A, which covers the portion of the county north of U.S. Rt. 11.
In the Adirondack bear hunting area, the take of 521 bears was down approximately 35 percent from 2009, but is consistent with the long-term average for that area.
