CANTON – An exhibit on “The History of Early Lighting: Pre-1850 through 1910,” curated by Carleton Stickney, is open for visitors at the St. Lawrence County Historical Association (SLCHA).

This exhibit is sponsored by National Grid.

For thousands of years, artificial lighting was primitive, but improved gradually over time, thanks to the innovations of people dedicated to the goal of better lighting. This exhibit features many examples of pre-electric lighting, including candle and match holders, oil lamps, and lanterns. Early lighting accessories are also highlighted, such as candle molds, doilies, and lamp chimneys.

SLCHA continues to practice COVID safety cautions, including social distancing and a face mask requirement for all customers and staff. For those planning to do research in our Archives, please call for an appointment so we are able to maintain your safety.

Hours are Tuesday-Thursday and Saturday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m., and Friday, 10 a.m.–6 p.m.; closed Sunday and Monday.

For more information about SLCHA and St. Lawrence County history, or to become a member, call 315-386-8133, e-mail info@slcha.org, or visit the website at www.slcha.org. The entrance and free parking are in back of the Museum.
