St. Lawrence County Emergency Services to store hazmat trailers at Massena Airport

CANTON — St. Lawrence County Emergency Services is set to store hazmat trailers at the Massena Airport after legislators approved a corresponding resolution earlier this month.

According to Emergency Services Director Matthew Denner, the county has two trailers, one that is used for “entry purposes” and another for decontamination.

Both trailers are 24 feet long and are enclosed for safety purposes.

According to Denner, both trailers were previously housed at the City of Ogdensburg fire station before eventually being moved temporarily to the Massena and Canton fire stations.

Part of the rationale behind moving the trailers to Massena is due in part to the ability to store them inside.

Both trailers will be housed in a hangar at the airport as part of the deal, which will cost the county $2,500 per year, officials say.

The contract is set to run from Jan. 1, 2023 to Dec. 31, 2023.

According to Denner, the county currently has 44 team members who support local fire departments who respond to incidents that may include hazardous materials.

Officials say the team has been deployed three times in the last year.

The resolution will now move to the full board for ratification during the board’s Feb. 7 meeting.
