CANTON — St. Lawrence County Board of Health president Dr. Andrew Williams discussed the possible effect vaccinating children in the age bracket may have on the pandemic at a recent Board of Legislators meeting.

Federal officials have voted unanimously to approve the Pfizer vaccine for children ages 5-11 following clinical trials that demonstrated a high efficacy.

“Pfizer presented a clinical trial where they showed that the vaccine seemed to be effective and also seemed to be effective for this age group,” Williams said.

To date, 1.9 million cases have been in the 5-11 age group, accounting for 9% of all cases in the U.S., he said.

More than 8,300 children in this age range have been hospitalized nationally, with 94 deaths in the age range.

To date there have been more than 700 pediatric deaths, with COVID now being listed as a top-10 cause of death for children in this age range, Williams said.

New COVID-19 vaccinations clinics for children 5-11 years old and 12-17 year olds will be held on Saturday, Nov. 13 at St. Lawrence University’s Leithead Field House.
