MASSENA -- Managing kidney disease is not something patients can do on their own. A specialist with St. Lawrence Health has the expertise to assist them with their care.
Massena Hospital Nephrology and Hypertension specialist Birinder Singh, MD, FRCPC, pointed out that kidney disease does not exhibit symptoms unless it is advanced to the point when you need dialysis.
Kidney function is determined by the glomerular filtration rate (GFR), and if it drops below 60, or if you have significant protein in the urine, it’s important to see a specialist.
During the summer months, or for someone who works in a hot environment, individuals with kidney disease should be aware of the importance of staying hydrated.
If a patient’s kidney function deteriorates and dialysis is required, Dr. Singh noted studies have shown that making the choice to begin treatment is far better than an unexpected start in an emergency room.
“Dialysis requires preparation in the form of access for blood circulation, which can be temporary or permanent. If and when the time comes for me to have this discussion with my patient, it will occur when they come to see me during an office visit,” he said.
“There is a lot of advancement in the world of kidney disease with a focus on preventing you from beginning dialysis,” Dr. Singh added. “An early referral to a nephrologist is of paramount importance. A referral from your primary care provider is typically the right approach, as seeing your prior health history helps me come to a definitive diagnosis and help manage your kidney problems thoroughly.”
