OGDENSBURG — Smoke detectors are credited with alerting a homeowner of a fire that was brewing in her basement on Pine Street this morning, according to Ogdensburg Assistant Fire Chief Ray LaRock.
When firefighters arrived on scene they discovered the basement was filling with smoke, LaRock said.
It was determined that the furnace had malfunctioned and the electrical box had melted off a furnace, he said.
LaRock said a fire would have broken out shortly if firefighters did not respond.
There was some smoke damage, but most of that was limited to the basement.
Police and rescue personnel were on scene.
