SLC Arts distributes grants to host of St. Lawrence County entities

Several St. Lawrence County individuals and organizations are recipients of New York State Council on the Arts’ Statewide Community Regrants Program grants.

SLC Arts distributes $100,000 annually to municipalities, libraries, 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations and individual artists in Lewis, Jefferson and St. Lawrence Counties, for the purpose of arts programming.

Grants are project based and support community-centered events and programs in any discipline, including but not limited to music, visual arts, theater, dance, electronic media, film and literary arts.

The 2023 Individual Artist Grants:

Gretchen Koehler, Potsdam - Project Title: Sit by the Fire. A musical celebration of winter, the artist will create 3 - 5 new fiddle tunes inspired by winter-themed passages written by St. Lawrence County authors, culminating in a fiddle/piano performance.

2023 Arts Education Grants:

Elizabeth Paige, Norfolk (School Partner: Norwood Norfolk Central School); Project Title The Community Coloring Beach Book: An interactive community mural inside the Norwood Beach pavilion. The project will take place in May - June 2023, and will align with Norwood-Norfolk Central School district’s Beach Week. Students will learn about the mural creation process and come to the Beach to observe demonstrations and physically paint the mural.

Michiko Taylor, Parishville (School Partner: Parishville Hopkinton Central School); Project Title: Watercolor Workshop for Beginners:. A series of watercolor classes offered to Parishville - Hopkinton 4th & 5th grade students.

Aubrey Slaterpryce, Potsdam (Community Partner: Potsdam Public Library); Project Title: Plays Across the Walls. A series of six playwriting workshops, during the month of May, that will connect the greater Potsdam community with artists incarcerated at the Riverview Correctional Facility.

Katherine Schuler, Ogdensburg (School Partner: Ogdensburg Free Academy); Project Title: Collaborative Woodworking in the Schools. A five-day woodworking class, for high school art students at Ogdensburg Free Academy, that focuses on wood as an art medium, and culminates in a collaborative wood lath installation piece.

Katherine Schuler, Heuvelton (School Partner: Heuvelton Central School); Project Title: Collaborative Woodworking in the Schools. A five-day woodworking class, for elementary school art students at Heuvelton Central School, that focuses on wood as an art medium and culminates in a collaborative wood lath installation piece.

2023 Community Arts Grants:

Chippewa Bay Community Club, Chippewa Bay; Project Title: Chippewa Bay Community Club Summer Backyard Concert Series. A series of four outdoor concerts, to be held July 2023.

Norfolk Concert Series, Norfolk; Project Title: Norwood Concert Series Development Plan. A series of four, outdoor summer concerts.

Morristown Public Library, Morristown; Project Title: Teen Plein Air 2023. A plein air festival for teens that culminates in an exhibit.

Norwood Public Library, Norwood; Project Title: Arts All Together. A five-week summer art program that provides a rich, cultural and imaginative hands–on art experience for children ages 5 and up.

Morristown Gateway Museum, Morristown; Project Title: Morristown Gateway Museum Summer Concert Series & Arts Festival. A series of one spring and eight summer outdoor concerts.

Madrid Dam Music Series, Madrid; Project Title: JDMS 2023 Summer Dam Jam Concert. A three-hour concert that features a house band, and invites musicians from the audience to jam along to multi-genre music.

Hammond Historical Museum, Hammond; Project Title: Hammond Scottish Festival 2023. A series of three performances for Hammond’s Scottish Festival. Artists will support the festival’s theme and cultural focus.

Steelin’ Country, Madrid; Project Title: Music: The Heart of the North Country. A weekend of music and dancing to coincide with the arrival of thousands of antique tractor enthusiasts. On Saturday afternoon, band members will lead a waltz and Texas two-step demonstration/workshop, and there will be a gospel singalong session on Sunday afternoon.

Edwards Arts Council, Edwards; Project Title: Edwards Opera House Singer Songwriter Series 2023. A series of 10 performances, by local and regional singer-songwriters, presented at the Edwards Opera House.

Len Mackey, Potsdam; Project Title: Everyone is Welcome - Music & Dance Performance Series. A series of five, interactive drum & dance performances presented at area schools, as well as one performance in Ives Park, Potsdam. All performances are open to the public.

Waddington Historical Association, Waddington; Project Title: WHA First Sundays Concert Series. A series of three off-season concerts that will pair music and history.

North Country Connections Orchestra, Potsdam; Project Title: North Country Connections Orchestra Live Interactive Community Concerts. A series of three off-season concerts that will pair music and history.

Greater Massena Chamber of Commerce, Massena; Project Title: Summer Concert Series 2023. A series of six outdoor, family friendly summer concerts.

The Yellow Barn Concert Series, Hammond; Project Title: Summer Concert Series 2023. A series of nine concerts that celebrate the power of music to elevate the human spirit and bring us together in community, set in a lovingly-restored 19th Century barn.

Through the SCR program, SLC Arts is supporting local artists and fostering creative communities. These projects are made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature, and administered by the St. Lawrence County Arts Council.
