Siena poll shows 48th District challenger Ritchie ahead of Aubertine

A new Siena College poll shows Republican challenger Patty Ritchie ahead of 48th District Sen. Darrel Aubertine.

The poll from Siena’s Research Institute today asked likely voters which candidate they would vote for. Ritchie came in with 48 percent compared to Aubertine at 45 percent, with seven percent saying they were undecided.

Ritchie say her slim lead “is heartening to every New Yorker eager for change and a new direction for our state.”

The poll said, in part:

“Ritchie leads Aubertine by a narrow 48-45 percent margin. Aubertine is winning more than three-quarters of Democrats and taking nearly one-third of Republicans, however, Ritchie has a two-to-one, 60-32 percent, lead among independent voters. While Aubertine has a 19-point lead in Jefferson County, Ritchie has an identical 19-point lead in St. Lawrence County, and she leads by 12 points in Oswego County. Ritchie leads by nine points with men and trails by four points with women. Voters under 55 years old are with Ritchie by 15 points, and those 55 and older are with Aubertine by 19 points. Aubertine is viewed favorably by 54 percent of voters and unfavorably by 33 percent. He is very favorable with Democrats and has a 45-43 percent favorability rating with Republicans. Ritchie has a 39-18 percent favorability rating, with 43 percent having no opinion.

“Aubertine is viewed most favorably in St. Lawrence and Jefferson Counties, while Ritchie is best known, and best liked, in St. Lawrence, virtually matching Aubertine there. Voters are nearly evenly divided on whether they want to re-elect Aubertine or they prefer ‘someone else.’”

In the 48th District as elsewhere around the state, creating jobs is seen by those polled as the most important issue, by nearly a two-to-one margin over the next most important issue, government reform, 32 percent to 17 percent.

“Today’s poll results make me want to work even harder for the chance to represent the forgotten Upstaters, restore their faith in government and, most importantly, get New Yorkers working again,” Ritchie said.

In response to the poll, Sen. Aubertine's campaign said, "Regardless of any poll, we will continue to point out that Senator Aubertine has been part of the solution, protecting jobs and fighting to reform Albany. Right now, Patty Ritchie has avoided any public statements and nobody knows a thing about her, other than she has aligned herself with Carl Paladino, attacks Darrel, and flip-flops. Her record does not stand up to the jobs-saving accomplishments of Darrel Aubertine."
