CANTON — Some St. Lawrence County citizens have reported being targeted by a phone scam from callers who claim to be from National Grid.
The reports, made to St. Lawrence County sheriff’s deputies, state that the caller will claim a balance is due because of a change in bill processing. The caller then demands payment from the client to avoid power being shut off, or being arrested.
Deputies would like to remind residents that utility companies, such as National Grid, will not contact customers in this manner.
People should never give payment information out to callers and should contact their utility companies directly if they feel there may be a billing issue.
