CANTON — St. Lawrence County Sheriff Brooks Bigwarfe and the Sheriff’s Office are making signs available for local businesses that wish to allow lawful concealed carry of firearms on their premises.

In a press release sent to local media on Sept. 15, Bigwarfe highlighted the new restrictions put in place with the newly enacted Concealed Carry Improvement Act (CCIA).

"The new gun legislation lists sensitive properties where an owner of a legally obtained concealed carry pistol permit may no longer legally carry their pistol. In order to comply with NYS legislation §265.01-d, entities who manage or own private property will need to display a sign to allow concealed carry pistol permit holders to carry on their premises,” the release states.

According to Bigwarfe, business owners can request a sign via email at SheriffAppSharedMailbox@stlawco.org, by stopping by the Sheriff’s Office in Canton, or by requesting a hard copy from the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office by filling out the business information section of the department’s app and selecting either yes or no when prompted for a sign.

The app is available on both the Google Play and Apple App stores. Users should search “St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s” when browsing for the app.

“The Sheriff’s Office maintains contact information for businesses located in St. Lawrence County. We are inviting all business owners and managers to visit our app and register or update your business information. The registered information provides first responders the information they need to help safeguard your property. The files contain information on contacts and key holders that may be needed in an emergency, additionally they can also make us aware of any special hazards that may exist within the building. This information is considered confidential and is utilized by law enforcement and emergency services in the course of their duties,” the release states.
