Sheriff extends travel ban as snow blisters county; shelter set up in Hammond as motorists rescued

A ban on travel in St. Lawrence County will continue until at least noon today, according to the St. Lawrence County Sheriff's office.

Strong winds and steady snowfall have led to poor visibility and dangerous road conditions.

An emergency shelter has been established at the Hammond Fire Department.

St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Department has reported multiple rescues were made using UTVs for people stranded in vehicles.

The Sheriff's Office is urging residents to stay off the roads until conditions improve.

Scattered power outages have also been reported thoughout the county, though they appear to be fewer than 100 as of this morning.

"Due to the deteriorating road conditions and extremely poor visibility, St. Lawrence County has declared a State of Emergency and there has been a travel ban put in place," the release says.

"Plows and fire department apparatus have been grounded due to lack of visibility on the roadways. Stay off the roads and contact 911 for emergency assistance."

A mid morning update is expected to determine if the ban will be lifted or extended.
