CANTON – Six retired judges, each of whom served St. Lawrence County with distinction, were honored with the unveiling of judicial portraits by the St. Lawrence County Bar Association on Thursday, June 1.

The unveiling took place before a large gathering of family, friends and colleagues of those honored at the St. Lawrence County Courthouse in Canton.

Recognized for their exemplary public service were: Hon. Kathleen M. Rogers, Surrogate Judge, St. Lawrence County, serving 1989 until 2014; Hon. David Demarest, Justice of the Supreme Court, 4th Judicial District, serving 1994 until 2015; Hon. Barbara R. Potter, Family Court Judge, St. Lawrence County, serving 2002 through 2011; Hon. Jerome J. Richards, County Court Judge, St. Lawrence County, serving 2005 until 2020; Hon. Cecily L. Morris, Family Court Judge, St. Lawrence County, serving 2012 through 2021; and Hon. John F. Richey, Surrogate Judge, St. Lawrence County, serving 2015 until 2022.

The portraits will be hung in courtrooms throughout the St. Lawrence County Courthouse.

Among those attending the event was St. Lawrence County Legislator Ben Hull who offered appreciation to the organizers.

"I want to thank Judge Mary Farley and her staff for organizing such a profound event. As the honorees were introduced, my eyes wandered up to the inscription along the ceiling of the courtroom which reads, “Law is a rule of civil conduct prescribed by the supreme power in the State commanding what is right and prohibiting what is wrong.” The six distinguished judges being honored bore that solemn duty across their many years on the bench. And we do well to respect that service every chance we get."
