CANTON -- A major restoration and rehabilitation of the fountain and the village green park is underway.
Since 2016, community members from First Presbyterian Church in Canton and Village representatives have started the execution of a three-phase plan to restore the village park.
The land was donated for the park in the 1840s, and over time, became recognized as a historic district on the National Register in 1975. The park is owned by the church and maintained by the village. Aside from its attraction as a place for people to gather, sit, read, talk and walk, the village park, also known as the village green, is used for events all year long, including the twice-weekly farmers’ markets in the growing season.
The three phases of restoration at the site will include structural improvements to the fountain, removal and planting of trees in the park footprint, and installing new stone pavers. Total project cost is expected to be as much as $200,000 when complete and will include a new pump, pipes, masonry, and restoration of the overall structure and for work on the surrounding area. Fundraising efforts by the Canton Park & Fountain Campaign have brought in more than $120,000 so far for the project.
Donations can be made to the Canton Park and Fountain Fund First Presbyterian Church 17 Park St, Canton NY, 13617.
