Rep. Stefanik adds name to letter asking Senate to support small businesses, workers during COVID-19 crisis

Congresswoman Elise Stefanik was among a bipartisan group of House members who on Wednesday, March 18 sent a letter to Senate leaders requesting additional support for small businesses, employees, and workers who may not be traditionally covered by unemployment insurance.

During the COVID-19 crisis, many freelance employees or independent contractors in the small business world are not covered by traditional unemployment insurance, a press release from the Schuylerville Republican’s office said. “During unprecedented times like these, it is vital for small businesses to have available cash flows to remain operational and to pay their employees,” the release said.

The letter urges Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Minority Leader Charles Schumer along with the rest of the Senate to:

• include the expansion of supplemental unemployment assistance for workers who have been impacted by adverse economic conditions

• bolster the SBA 7a loan guaranty program by raising the maximum loan guaranty percentage to a minimum of 90%

• include language in their emergency stimulus package that allows more individuals and businesses to utilize the House-passed paid leave tax credits

“Small businesses are the backbone of our North Country economy, and they must be protected during this unprecedented crisis,” said Congresswoman Stefanik. “I urge the Senate to prioritize the unique needs of small businesses, employees, and workers in order to avoid closures and financial disruption for hardworking families.”

“I have spoken directly with many small businesses in my district and have assured them I am working hard on legislative solutions,” Stefanik said in the release. “During this crisis, Congress must lead on protecting the American worker.”
