RENSSELAER FALLS -- The village board unanimously approved a resolution Monday night recognizing the efforts of New York State Trooper Zach Benson who sprang into action July 19 to retrieve five children from the Oswegatchie River.
The resolution crafted by Mayor Michael Hammond noted that at 9:01 p.m., “Trooper Benson was in the right place at the right time.”
The State Trooper Facebook page stated, “He was right there when he got the call for five kids swimming, stranded after the water level rose. Using his swift water training, one by one, he and the local fire chief [Dallas Denny] went into the eater and brought them to shore.”
‘This scene’s level of professionalism should be recognized, the calmness and integrity displayed in this situation was swift and on point. The goal of teamwork and optimism made the situation manageable. This mission’s success was largely due to the leadership of Trooper Benson and brought to fruition through the support and assistance of the Rensselaer Falls Fire and Rescue Department, under the leadership of Fire Chief Denny. For all of those that were on scene, in the water and out of the water who helped aid and assist in the situation should be recognized for their contributions to the success of the rescue of five stranded teeangers,” the resolution read.
