OGDENSBURG -- The Frederic Remington Art Museum is getting $200,000 from the Hearst Foundations.
Most of the award, $150,000, is restricted to helping fund the multiyear restoration of the Parish Mansion, original home of the museum.
And $50,000 is offered in a 1:1 challenge grant to help pay for the museum’s educational programs. The museum has until the end of 2013 to raise the $50,000 matching portion.
“As structured the award will be worth a total of $250,000 to the museum assuming we are successful in raising the matching funds for education,” said museum executive director Ed LaVarnway.
The first Hearst Foundation was founded in 1945 by William Randolph Hearst, who as it happens sent Remington to Cuba in 1897 and 1898 to cover the Spanish American War. Remington and Hearst were well acquainted.
“We are extremely grateful and honored for this award and recognition of the museum’s contribution to American culture from such a prestigious organization as Hearst,” LaVarnway said.
The Frederic Remington Art Museum, 303 Washington St., Ogdensburg, is dedicated to collecting, exhibiting, preserving and interpreting the art and archives of Frederic Remington, and contains an unmatched collection of his works.
The museum is open May 15 - October 15, Monday -Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday, 1 to 5 pm and October 16 – May 14, Wednesday -Saturday, 11 am to 5 pm and Sunday, 1 to 5 pm.
