Rally to seek justice for the killing of Treyanna Summerville planned today in Canton

CANTON — As the Department of Social Services comes under scrutiny for various claims of misconduct a rally will be held at 48 Court Street today at noon to seek justice for the killing of Treyanna Summerville.

“It’s been a year since Treyanna Summerville, a 2020 Gouverneur High School graduate, was brutally murdered just days before her high school graduation,” Jennifer Baxtron a local activist who believes her son was intentionally overdosed by another person.

Baxtron is demanding that St. Lawrence County District Attorney Gary Pasqua fully investigate Summerville’s death.

Summerville’s mother Lashana Charlton has been charged with manslaughter after she allegedly failed to seek medical help for her daughter who was injured and malnourished.

Initially Summerville’s 13-year-old sibling was charged with second-degree murder, but those charges were later dropped.

While this rally is calling on the DA to further investigate the death of Summerville, a rally last year pointed the finger at St. Lawrence County DSS as well.

At that rally, many people alleged that reports of abuse at Summerville’s home were reported to DSS on numerous occasions, and many blamed the teen’s death on the failure of DSS to act on the complaints.

Summerville was born on November 2, 2001 in Anchorage, AK, and died June 22, 2020. She was a member of the GHS Class of 2020, who had dreams of attending college or joining the U.S Air Force, according to her obituary.

“She enjoyed her time at school, where she was a dedicated student and track athlete. She would often be seen walking to her favorite places around town to enjoy quiet time. Treyanna was very kind and compassionate to those that were blessed to know her and will be greatly missed by many,” the obituary said.
