OGDENSBURG -- The Seaway Festival Remington 1 Rip Friot Canoe Race from Heuvelton to Ogdensburg kicked off the start of the Ogdensburg Seaway Festival Saturday, July 24.
Fifteen paddlers participated in the 10-mile downstream race on the Oswegathchie.
James Mallory won the race with a time of 1:21:33 with his kayak in the K-1 unlimited division. “I’m training for Nationals in Pennsylvania in August. It’s beautiful country up here,” said Mallory of Rochester.
Kayakers in the K-1 class were Roger Gocking, Saranac Lake, with a time of 1:32:39 and Peter Jaworski, Utica, with a time of 1:35:13. Ogdensburg residents Jason and McKenzie Butterfield finished the K2 race in 1:57:55. In the recreational class, John Beudette, Canton, completed the course in 1:54:57 and Mike Berry, Ogdensburg, came in at 2:14:40.
In the canoe divisions, Gene Newman, Canton, finished the C-1 Man with a time of 1:34:49. Allen and Mary Kelly, Rensselaer Falls, took first in the C-2 stock race at 1:31:20 and second place finishers were Will Siegfried, Potsdam, and David Sommerstein, Canton, at 1:36:31. Debra and Paul Backus, Canton, completed the
C-2 mixed race at 1:47:43. Kerry Newell, Heuvelton, participated with a DNF in the C-1 Men's division.
The event was co-sponsored by the St. Lawrence Valley Paddlers, along with the Ogdensburg Seaway Festival.
