Program eases SLU grads' entrance into NYU nursing program

CANTON -- An agreement between St. Lawrence University and New York University's College of Nursing will expedite St. Lawrence students' entrance into NYU's nursing programs for a second bachelor's degree and a master's degree.

The program will be available to students beginning with the Class of 2012.

St. Lawrence students will have several options.

After earning a bachelor's degree at SLU, they may enroll in NYU's accelerated 15-month program or its standard two-year program, both of which lead to a bachelor of science in nursing.

Then, if they wish to pursue specialized study, they can enroll in NYU's dual-degree program, leading to a bachelor's degree in nursing and a master's degree in nursing, preparing them for careers as nurse practitioners, nurse-midwives, educators or nurse managers.

"NYU has expressed huge confidence in St. Lawrence with this agreement that allows students to benefit from their liberal arts education, avoid the GRE or MCAT graduate entrance exams, and enroll immediately into a second bachelor program and eventually a graduate program, in the critical-care field of nursing. We're proud to add this option for our students who choose medical careers," said Valerie D. Lehr, St. Lawrence vice president and dean of academic affairs.

US News & World Report ranks NYU's College of Nursing as the number-one graduate nurse practitioner program in geriatrics in the nation. The college ranks 11th in research funding from the National Institute of Health and its doctoral program was recognized by the National Research Council with a rank of 7th among the nursing programs evaluated.

This new program is one of many medical profession options at SLU, including its Early Assurance Program with the College of Medicine of the SUNY Upstate Medical University at Syracuse; an Early Assurance Program at the SUNY Buffalo School of Dentistry; and a pre-college matriculation early assurance program with SUNY Upstate Medical University (College of Medicine) for students interested in rural medicine.

Said St. Lawrence President William L. Fox, "Combining the liberal arts at St. Lawrence University with the highly regarded and progressive nursing program at New York University prepares students to begin one of the most needed and fulfilling careers of our future."
