POTSDAM -- The village of Potsdam board passed a resolution at their Oct. 19 meeting to turn over the rolls for this year's unpaid taxes to the county treasurer.
As of Oct. 7, the total amount of unpaid taxes in the village totaled $371,374.23. An additional $25,996.21 in interest and penalties brings the total amount to be collected by the county on the village's behalf to $397,370.44.
Village Trustee Alexandra Wilke asked why the amount was so much more than last year's unpaid amount. Village Clerk Lori Queor said one taxpayer, with taxes of around $100,000 paid his just after the Oct. 7 date, and that payment was not reflected in the total. Besides that large payment, the total amount was about $8,000 more than last year.
The county will cover the unpaid amount for the village and then collect the outstanding taxes from the village residents who did not pay initially.
