POTSDAM -- A Potsdam Vietnam War veteran will address a U. S. Senate hearing on the rights of persons with disabilities Thursday at 9 a.m.
John Lancaster is disabled and a retired Executive Director of the National Council On Independent Living.
He will be speaking in support of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2006, and signed by the United States in 2009. To confirm the agreement the Senate must also pass it.
He traveled to Washington D.C. to testify why he believes the agreement must be signed to ensure the rights of disabled persons are secured world-wide.
Lancaster will be joined by Steven Groves, of The Heritage Foundation; John Wodatch, a former chief of the Disability Rights Section Civil Rights Division of the Department of State; former Attorney General Richard Thornburgh; Kudith Heumann, a special advisor for International Disability Rights of the U.S. Department of State; and Eve Hill, Senior Counselor to the Assistant Attorney for Civil Rights of the Department of State.
