POTSDAM – The Potsdam Snack Pack Program was recently selected for a 2023 Community Impact Grant for $3,000 from United Way of Northern New York. The funds will be used to purchase food items for more than 325 local students enrolled in the program.

“Announcement of the grant from United Way came at a time when overall cash donations were starting to decline. We were concerned about our ability to maintain the same level and quality of service provided to the students so the award will be a huge benefit as we start the new year,” said Program Director Laurell Brault. “The snack pack program was excited to continue their partnership with United Way because they are committed to supporting the needs of local communities.”

The snack pack program was launched in November 2016 at Lawrence Avenue Elementary School to provide healthy snacks to eligible students. At the time, approximately one-third of the students were eligible for free or reduced lunch. Over the years the program has expanded and currently serves students across the school district. During the 2021-2022 school year, the program provided snack packs and lunch items to more than 400 students each week. Each snack pack contains a minimum of eight items, including a lunch meal such as macaroni and cheese, tuna and crackers, chef Boyardee microwavable meals, soup, and chicken or tuna in the pouch.

The snack pack program was one of 24 organizations across the North Country selected to receive a 2023 Community Impact Grant from United Way of NNY. The program also received a $3,000 grant from United Way in 2021.
