Potsdam police won't participate in either Back the Blue or BLM demonstrations Saturday

POTSDAM -- With rival demonstrations planned Saturday in downtown Potsdam, the mayor has released a statement saying the village wants the day to proceed peacefully, and that Potsdam police won’t be participating in the parade.

A local resident has organized a “Back the Blue” parade for Potsdam that afternoon. The local Black Lives Matter chapter is organizing a counter-protest at the same time.

Mayor Reinhold Tischler says Potsdam police will be busy providing security and traffic control for the event, and won’t participate in the parade.

His complete statement:

“The Village of Potsdam will be hosting two large planned gatherings on Saturday, August 15. These include a "Back the Blue" parade and rally hosted by Mr. Joseph Gallagher, and a demonstration led by the Potsdam Black Lives Matter movement.

It is our goal to ensure that these events remain peaceful and safe for all. Potsdam Village Police will be overseeing and providing security at these events. Our department was invited to take part in the parade, but Chief (Mark) Murray has declined the invitation, as our officers will be busy with traffic control and safety measures.

As you know, we must uphold everyone's First Amendment rights to freedom of speech and freedom of assembly. We are doing everything in our power to work with the organizers of Saturday's events to ensure that they can take place safely, with respect for all involved.”
