Potsdam Police Department sees increase in arrests last quarter

POTSDAM – The 520 arrests by the Potsdam Police Department from April to June this year amounted to more than the department has seen in any other recent quarter.

“Comparatively speaking, that was a higher arrest rate than the previous few quarters,” said Police Chief Mark Murray at the Board of Trustees Oct. 21 meeting.

A bar chart the chief produced showed nearly that many arrests from July to September 2018 and about the same as in July to September 2017, but clearly more than other periods during that time.

The chief reported 2,291 incidents of all types in the three months April to June this year.

There were 815 traffic stops, and 68% of drivers were released with a warning, compared with 75% in the previous quarter.

There were 437 vehicle and traffic citations issued, 19 driving while intoxicated incidents, 96 motor vehicle accidents, 50 unclassified misdemeanors, 13 drug-related arrests, three tickets for village ordinance violations, and one Alcohol and Beverage Control violation.

Penal law figures were 17 felony arrests, 25 for misdemeanors, and 41 violations. The number of domestic incidents was 25.

In June DWI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Refresher courses were attended by six officers.
