AKWESASNE -- Akwesasne Mohawk Police reportedly detained four people attempting to illegally enter the United States.

Police received a report on Monday around 9:30 p.m. about suspicious persons in the area of Third Street located in the village of Kana:takon (St. Regis).

Officers conducted a search where four individuals were located and detained, police said. All four people were identified as foreign nationals and transported to Immigration Canada for further processing.

"The Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service would like to inform the community to be aware of their surroundings, especially those that reside near a river system," a statement from Akwesasne police said. "People that are involved in human smuggling have attempted to utilize shorelines along the St. Lawrence in the areas of Kana:takon and Tsi Snaihne. Human smuggling is a crime; not only does it pose serious health and safety concerns for the individual(s) committing the act, but it places the entire community of Akwesasne at risk."

Akwesasne Mohawk Police invite the community to attend the next Akwesasne Community Watch meeting. Visit their Facebook page for more details.

Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity or persons in the area is encouraged to call Central Dispatch at 613-575-2000 or the Akwesasne Crime Stoppers at 613-575-2255. Tipsters can also remain anonymous when reporting incidents to the police.
