Pine Street Beach in Potsdam expected to open June 8; summer recreation program info expected soon

POTSDAM -- The beach at Pine Street is expected to open June 8 and a decision on the summer recreation program is expected soon.

Potsdam Recreation officials say the state is likely going to update guidelines and information for summer recreation programs and the hope is that some rules will be changed.

"We know everyone has been waiting patiently in regards to the beach and summer rec programming," a statement from Potsdam rec officials said. "As we eagerly await more information and guidelines that should be more clear this week, we just want to share that information that has not been released because we were anticipating and hoping for some of the changes that are coming."

For example, camp guidelines released a few weeks ago stated that swim lessons were still not allowed. Officials did not want to throw in the towel just yet.

Although nothing is official, if a summer program does happen, it will run July 12 through Au. 13 (Monday through Friday).

"Again, this is not official, but an attempt to let families know what was originally discussed among the recreation commission," officials said.

In good news, Sandstoner Park and Beach will officially open Tuesday, June 8.

The beach will accommodate Lawrence Avenue elementary fourth grade students from 9:30 a.m. to around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of this week, along with Monday through Thursday during the week of June 14.

The beach is open for everyone, but families and visitors are asked that whenever possible, take advantage of the beach between 2 and 7 p.m., when it may be a little more relaxed without the coming and going of the elementary students.

"Since we are opening earlier for the next two weeks, the beach will close at 7 p.m. daily," officials said. "Once we get past these next weeks however, our operations will likely return to either a 10-7, or 11-8 schedule.

At the moment, beach capacity is still set at 50%, so 125 individuals are allowed at Sandstoner Beach (in the water and beachfront) at one time.

More information will be shared as it becomes available.
