CANTON – The SLC Partners 4 Substance Use Prevention will meet Aug. 9, at 10 a.m. at the Best Western University Inn in Canton.

The meeting will feature information on drug and paraphernalia identification and safety with a presentation by Detective Arthur Shattuck from the Sheriff’s Department.

In addition, task force members will finalize plans for the Shredding the Stigma community event to be held on Aug. 24 from 4-8 p.m. at Whittaker Park and Civic Center in Waddington.

The event aims to highlight the work of the task force, support individuals and families, and honor those who have died from substance use disorder.

The keynote speaker for the event will be Tony Hoffman, former Pro BMX Racer, to share his story and path to recovery.

Local families will also share their journeys and challenges with stigma.

The evening will end with a dedication balloon launch. Food trucks will be onsite and free activities for the entire family will occur throughout the event.

The task force, St. Lawrence County Partners 4 Substance Use Prevention, has been meeting since December 2018—the goal of each meeting is to:

• Provide education on a relevant topic to assist in spreading information to the county at large;

• Plan and implement activities related to prevention and education, intervention and treatment, and support during recovery; and

• Network and share ideas, events, and resources.

The meetings bring together a variety of individuals including treatment and recovery specialists, educators, health care practitioners, law enforcement, first responders, pharmacists, concerned citizens, and public health officials. Meetings are held the second Friday morning of each month and are open to all.
