Three past performers for the Norwood Village Green concert series, including a Parishville native, have netted 2011 Grammy nominations, according to the series organizer Joseph Liotta.

The 2011 Grammy nominations were announced on Wednesday, Dec. 1. Flutist Peter Phippen, children’s storyteller Bill Harley and blues great James Cotton were among those nominated.

Both Phippen and Harley performed for the Norwood Village Green Concert Series in 2009 and 2010 respectively.

James Cotton performed for the series in a concert held in Hosmer Hall in the early 1990’s.

Phippen, a native of the Parishville area and a graduate of Parishville-Hopkinton Central School, was nominated for his recording “Woodnotes Wyld: Historic Flute Sounds from the Dr. Richard W. Payne Collection”.

The nomination is in the Best Native American Music category. It will be the first in a series of recordings that he will do using this collection of flutes.

Phippen performed for the 2009 edition of the Norwood Village Green Concert Series with his son Josh Daby accompanying him on percussion.

It was Phippen’s second appearance on the series, both times accompanied by Josh. Josh is a graduate of Potsdam High School.

Harley has previously received two Grammy awards, in 2006 and again in 2009 for best spoken work for children. He again was nominated in the same category in 2011 for his recording “The Best Candy in the Whole World”.

Harley appeared in the 2010 edition of the Norwood Village Green Concert Series in a special program for the K-6 grade students at Norwood-Norfolk Central School in addition to his evening performance for the general public.

The legendary blues harp player James Cotton was nominated for a 2011 Grammy for his recording “Giant” in the Best Traditional Blues category. Mr. Superharp, as James Cotton is also known, was awarded a Grammy in 1996 for his “Deep in the Blues” recording. That recording was also in the Traditional Blues category.

Over the years the Norwood Village Green Concert Series has presented 10 Grammy Award recipients.

The series has also presented 10 Juno Award recipients.

Programming for the Norwood Village Green Concert Series’ 38th annual season has been completed. The compete 2011 schedule is posted on the series website; www.norwoodvillagegreenconcertseries.org.
