CANTON — Parents of students in the Canton Central School District who are fully remote learners will soon need to decide if they want their child to attend school in person.

“During the summer, families were asked to decide if their children would attend fully remote or in-person,” CCS Superintendent Ron Burke said in a statement to the district. “Under New York State pandemic regulations, the District is required to provide instructional learning spaces that are socially distanced. In order to comply with this health and safety measure we needed to reduce the number of students present on any given day. Currently, we offer a hybrid learning model for students in Grades 6-12 in which approximately half of our students are remote and half are in-person on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.”

Families that chose fully remote learning are provided the opportunity to transition to in-person learning each quarter. Should a transition from fully remote to in-person be chosen, the family is required to notify their child’s building principal no later than noon Friday, Oct. 15.

“As of this notice, we have many classes across all grade levels from PK-12 that are near capacity as determined by the social distancing calculations provided by New York State. Should the requests for in-person instruction exceed our space capacity, we may need to switch to a hybrid model for PK-5 or alter our hybrid model for grades 6-12,” the superintendent said.

Those with questions or concerns regarding this process, can contact Burke at 315-386-8561 ext. 4202.
