One new COVID-19 case reported in Akwesasne, 54 residents quarantined

AKWESASNE — The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) reports one new case of COVID-19 Friday, which makes 17 total active cases under the Tribe’s jurisdiction. Officials there say six people have recovered, leaving 54 in quarantine.

“As vaccinations continue in accordance with the CDC’s recommended guidelines, we ask those who will soon receive the vaccine to please be thoughtful,” a press release from EOC said. “The vaccine’s purpose is to protect our community, particularly our most vulnerable members — our elders. It’s not intended to let individuals take vacations or other non-essential trips, nor does it allow you to no longer follow the safety protocols that are still being highly recommended.”

The vaccine only prevents the development of severe symptoms. It does not prevent you from contracting the virus and transmitting it to others. Continue to wear a mask, social distance, wash your hands, and stay in your immediate household’s bubble.

If you have received orders to quarantine or isolate, remain at home until officially released by a public health official. Do not travel in the community. Those in need of emergency food supplies or other essential items, call 518-358-3021. Residents can call staff directly at: Everett Lazore, family advocate, 518-333-8450; Kerry Jacobs, victim advocate, 518- 651-9150 or Crystal Stehlin, junior advocate, 518-651-1435.

Seniors 65 and over can register to receive a vaccination. A provider from Health Services will contact people to complete a health screening and schedule an appointment. To pre-register, call the Tribe’s Office for the Aging at 518-358-2963.
