OGDENSBURG -- The oldest person in New York state, a resident at the United Helpers skilled nursing facility, has died.

UH announced the Tuesday morning death of Beulah Meloche, who was also the fifth-oldest person in the United States.

She would have turned 114 years old.

“One interesting note, when she came to us her admissions paperwork listed her birthday as being in November, however when the Gerontology Research Group was certifying her as a Supercentarian they determined her birthday was actually Dec. 5, a few weeks later than what we had been celebrating, and actually continued to celebrate. We celebrated her birthday as being on Nov. 23, 1906,” United Helpers said.

UH said sometime after they celebrated her as the oldest person in New York state, she was bumped to second-oldest in the state. However, she reclaimed her title in November 2019.

When Meloche turned 111, Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-Willsboro, recognized her on the floor of Congress.

“Meloche was born in Chazy, New York, and grew up in nearby Plattsburgh. She claims to have been born on 23 November 1906, but the validation process concluded that she was born on 5 December 1906,” according to her page on Gerontology Wiki. “For many years, Meloche worked as a caregiver for children. She never had children of her own. She had three sisters: Mabel, Edith, and Matilda. She was married to Armand Meloche before his death on 1 July 1972. Meloche has lived in a nursing home in Ogdensburg, New York, since 2011. She became the oldest living person in the state of New York following the death of 114 year-old Alelia Murphy on 23 November 2019. She is also the fifth-oldest living person in the United States.”
