OGDENSBURG—Ogdensburg City Manager Sarah Purdy says Empire State Development says that public boat launches are exempt from the non-essential designation issued Friday.
“We removed the barricades first thing this morning. The city welcomes this clarification because closing the launches was not popular and we didn’t like it either,” she said.
The order issued Friday said boat launches and marinas were to be closed to recreational vessel, but could remain open to support the government or businesses deemed essential.
The order issued Friday stated that parks and public spaces are considered essential, but playgrounds and golf courses are not considered essential.
ESD said social distancing could not be practiced properly on playgrounds.
Ogdensburg was not alone in closing public boat launches following the state order. Canton closed the Little River and Pyrites Boat Launches and Lisbon closed its boat launch and campground.
With the new “clarification” from ESD that public launches would be exempt, it is unclear if other municipalities will reopen water access.
