Ogdensburg Free Academy graduate presented Retired Educators scholarship

Franklin and St. Lawrence County members of the Northern Zone of the Retired Educators of New York were pleased to present the 2021 Ross C. Hudson Scholarship ($400) to St. Lawrence County resident Sadie O’Neil, daughter of Kevin and Marci O’Neil of Ogdensburg.

A graduate of the Ogdensburg City School district, Sadie was in the top ten of her class while participating in soccer (team captain), cheerleading, National Honor Society, Business and Marketing Honor Society and other groups.

She was named a NYS Scholar Athlete (soccer/cheerleading) for three years making First Team-All Northern in both sports. She earned the Section X Sportsmanship Award and the Athlete of Distinction Award as a Senior. She volunteered for Youth Lacrosse and Minor Hockey, blood drives, as City Recreation Cheer and Gymnastics Camps Coach, and many other community groups/events while often holding part-time jobs.

A member of a family with many educators, Katie plans to major in Physical Education at SUNY Cortland and hopes to pass on the wonderful lessons she learned from athletics and academics to her future students.

Joe Russo, President of the RENY/NZ Clifton-Fine-Edwards Retired Teachers, announced that their unit members happily gathered for their annual summer meeting at the Twin Lakes Hotel in Star Lake.

At the meeting, Scholarship Chairperson Sally Capone presented the 2021 P.A. Miranda Scholarship of $1,500 to Clifton-Fine Central School graduate and Salutatorian, Garrett Simmons, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Simmons of Oswegatchie. Garrett will attend Clarkson University in the Fall to major in history.

The 2021 Janet P. Dana Scholarship ($400) was presented to Franklin County resident Adyson Miller, daughter of Tasha Miller of Chateaugay, who graduated in the top ten of her senior class from the Chateaugay Central School District.
