OGDENSBURG — On the heels of success in finding grants to pay for improvements to the Main Street pump station, the city is now eyeing state funding to improve the Oswegatchie Station.
Interim City Manager Andrea Smith said the city will apply for a Preserve New York Grant which would help create a historic structure report on the pump house.
She said the objective of such grants and reports is to “identify, document, and preserve New York’s cultural and historic buildings, structures, and landscapes. This program funds consulting reports only and will not fund capital repairs or construction costs, architectural plans and specifications, schematic designs, or construction documents,” she said.
Smith noted that the report would help identify potential reuse options.
Such grants do not help with construction costs, but are often used to pay for the consulting work that helps secure funding from other grants once they are completed.
The grant will require a 20 percent cost match from the city.
City Councilor Michael Powers questioned what that cost might be.
Smith said the reports typically cost about $20,000, meaning the local share would likely be about $2,000.
Councilor Dan Skamperle noted that the city recently spent $25,000 on a roof or the facility.
“It’s such a beautiful building down there,” he said.
Smith said that the grant is currently used for cold storage.
The pump house sits near the Oswegatchie River and the City Maple City trail.
