OGDENSBURG -- An Ogdensburg couple is accused of welfare fraud, allegedly receiving benefits they were not entitled to.
Joel T. Gilbert, 49, and Kim M. Gilbert, 48, have been charged with third-degree welfare fraud and first-degree offering a false instrument.
The two were arrested by the St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Department following an investigation by the St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services Investigations Unit.
According to a news release from Investigator Gerald L. Jenks of the county District Attorney's office, the Gilberts filed false and forged documents with Social Services between November 2007 and July 2009.
Investigators said the couple received $6,968.53 in Food Stamps and medical assistance benefits that they were not entitled to.
The Gilberts have been arraigned in Canton Village Court.
Kim Gilbert was ordered held without bail.
Joel Gilbert was released to the supervision of the Probation Department.
