Ogdensburg Chamber chooses Old Arsenal for next collectible ornament

OGDENSBURG -- The Greater Ogdensburg Chamber of Commerce will be using the Old Arsenal for a local historic landmark to be depicted on the collectable ornament the chamber offers for sale this year.

The arsenal was voted this year’s winner at the Boys’ and Girls’ Club Expo. The Ogdensburg Public Library and the Abbe Picquet Monument each came in 4 votes behind for second place.

The Old Arsenal, 100 Lafayette St., was built in 1858 by New York State for use as an armory. General Schuyler F. Judd commanding the northern New York militia was credited with getting the state to build it during the administration of Governor John A. King.

The building originally housed cannons, muskets, sabers and other paraphernalia of war. It was purchased by the City of Ogdensburg on Nov. 25, 1873 for $1,400. Sold in 1960 to Frank A. Augsbury, Jr., it now contains offices. Part of an old cannon remains on the north lawn.

The chamber’s popular ornament collection now includes: 2005 Lighthouse Point, 2006 Spirit of Liberty, Soldiers & Sailors Monument, 2007 Remington Art Museum, 2008 NYS Armory, 2009 Ogdensburg City all, 2010 Ogdensburg-Prescott International Bridge.

For more information call the chamber office at 393-3620.
