Officials seek info about homemade gravestone on Potsdam-Hannawa Falls trail

HANNAWA FALLS — A mysterious gravestone has appeared on the Red Sandstone Trail and officials are hopeful for more information about it.

Blair Madore, who is a trail coordinator, says he spotted the unusual grave marker along the trail and that it must have been erected in the last year or so.

“It is made of wood, even if it looks like stone,” he said.

Engraved in the wood is Lena Cooklin, July 1946, July 17 1961.

“This may have been erected by someone as part of a prank or treasure hunt but you cannot simply erect things like this on private property,” Madore said.

The trail is on land owned by Brookfield Power between Potsdam and Hannawa Falls.

“I would feel compelled to remove it,” he said. “Yet, if this was put here by someone remembering a loved one, I'd like to get in contact with them so we could deal with this matter respectfully.”

If anyone has any information to share, contact Blair Madore at madorebf@potsdam.edu or 315-261-0751.
