He will fill the position left vacant by Shawn Shaver, who resigned after city council decided to investigate whether or not he lived in the city limits.
Powers has previous experience as a city council member having served a term beginning in 2008. He will hold the seat until November, when a special election will be held to fill the two remaining years of Shaver’s term.
Powers was instrumental in the fight to keep Ogdensburg Correctional Facility open in 2010.
City Councilor Jennifer Stevenson said she was pleased with the interest from the public in filling the vacant seat. Powers was chosen out of a pool of three candidates.
Mayor Wayne Ashley said he was pleased to have Powers on board.
