The number of bluebird fledglings in St. Lawrence County in 2010 is the highest in at least five years, continuing a rising trend..
Bluebird watchers report that the 2010 nesting season has resulted in the fledging of 668 young bluebirds from the New York State Bluebird Society's Rt. 11 nestbox trail from Broome County up through to Essex County.
In. St. Lawrence County, 75 of the birds fledged in 2010. That compares to 59 in 2006, 60 in 2007, 67 in 2008, and 71 in 2009.
Total Bluebirds fledged on the trail since it started in 1997 now stands at 4,923.
The nestboxes are placed in pairs in pairs about 8 feet apart at each site. Pairing helps keep the tree swallows in one box so the other box is available for bluebirds.
Nestbox monitors in St. Lawrence County are Martha Tom Grow, Gene Patraw, George and Terry Rossi, Ted Linn, and Jackie Young in St. Lawrence County.
Bluebird fledglings were reported at nestboxes at Bayside Cemetery near Potsdam, near the SLU Golf Course and Judson St. Rd. near Canton, and Gouverneur Correctional Facility.
The Rt. 11 Trail runs from Broome County through Cortland, Onondaga, Madison, Oswego, Jefferson, St. Lawrence, Franklin, Essex and Clinton counties.
The totals for trail were 519 in 2006, 498 in 2007, 576 in 2008, and 660 in 2009, according to the New York Bluebird Society.
