NORWOOD — Residents in the village of Norwood have raised concerns over juvenile delinquents breaking laws within the village, including destruction of private property, trespassing and the brutal slaughter of numerous chickens.

Village officials, including the police department, have attempted to address the situation, according to village board meeting minutes from both May and June.

“The PD has been successful in several arrests within the Village as well as addressing the juvenile delinquents that have been vandalizing properties. Potsdam PD has agreed to allow Norwood PD to use their LiveScan fingerprinting machine,” the May report reads.

According to the June report, numerous arrests were made in regards to the ongoing situation.

“The PD have been dealing with the juvenile delinquents that have been causing problems with the Village and have made several arrests,” the report reads.

Despite the work of the police department, which functions on a part-time basis, residents have taken matters into their own hands with the creation of an informal neighborhood watch.

A Facebook page simply titled “Norwood Neighborhood watch” was seemingly created in response to the actions of the juvenile delinquents. As of press time the group has 659 members.

Residents have posted concerns in the group, ranging from trees on private property being destroyed, to chickens being killed and left on front yards and other personal property being stolen or damaged.

Multiple posts also suggest many residents may attend the next village board meeting on Aug. 16 at 5 p.m., though it is not clear at this time just how many will be in attendance.

Calls to the Norwood Police Department have also gone unanswered as of press time.
