NORWOOD -- The Board of Chiefs of the Norwood Fire Department recently recognized Robert Haggett for his many years of devotion to the department and the community of Norwood.

Through his tenure the past eight years as parade chairman, the 4th July parade has grown from about 20 units of firefighters and fire and rescue trucks into a region-wide event consisting of 70 to 80 units, with close to 30 floats and nearly 900 parade participants with another 8,000 viewing it.

Local businesses are very much involved and have a friendly competition vying for the top three float trophies, said Department Treasurer Tim Donohue.

“From the World of Dr. Seuss” is an example of Hagget’s creativity and insight into setting a theme for the day’s parade, adding to the pleasure of the viewers.

Haggett now has chosen to turn the event back over to the fire department.

Donhue said the department is very thankful for his time and dedication.

He continues serving the department as manager of the famous Norwood Brass Firemen, a position he has held for over 40 years.

He had already started prepping for July 4, and bands for next year’s parade have been hired. The 2014 parade theme will be: “Once Upon A Time.”
