State sales tax revenues in the North Country grew by nearly five percent in 2011, according to state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli.

Statewide, the figure was up five percent from 2010 to 2011, down from 9.9 percent in 2010. DiNapoli explains that nearly a third of the 2010 increase was due to a higher tax rate in New York City.

Outside New York City, the collections rate was 4.1 percent higher in 2011, amounting to $6.79 billion; the 2010 collections were $6.52 billion, an increase of 4.7 percent over 2009.

Growth was strongest in the fourth quarter of 2011, indicating a more rapidly rising trend statewide.
