North Country roads could be slippery as forecast predicts more rain for St. Lawrence Valley; M-W Central delays opening

The National Weather Service in Burlington is warning of mixed precipitation until early this afternoon in the St. Lawrence Valley, and temperatures near freezing could result in icy and slippery conditions for walking and driving.

Madrid-Waddington Central is the only schools so far that has announced a delay in opening today, by two hours.

Snow, sleet and freezing rain are possible, expected to be intermittent through the morning.

The NWS warns of slippery conditions, especially on secondary roads, and reduced visibility. They are advising people to allow extra time to travel for the Monday morning commute.

The rain is expected to persist, on and off, for several days, perhaps mixing with snow Tuesday night.

The national Weather Service forecast for the St. Lawrence Valley and northwestern Adirondacks:

Today: Rain, mainly before 2pm. High near 40. Southeast wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Tonight: Rain likely, mainly after 3am. Cloudy, with a low around 34. Southeast wind 7 to 9 mph becoming east after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Tuesday: Rain. High near 38. Northeast wind 8 to 13 mph becoming southeast in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Tuesday Night: Rain showers likely before midnight, then rain showers, snow showers, and sleet likely between midnight and 1am, then rain and snow showers likely after 1am. Cloudy, with a low around 30. West wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Wednesday: A chance of rain and snow showers before 1pm, then a chance of rain showers between 1pm and 4pm, then a chance of rain and snow showers after 4pm. Cloudy, with a high near 37. West wind 8 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Wednesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 24.

Thursday: A chance of rain and snow after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 38. Chance of precipitation is 40%.
