CANTON -- A $58,750 grant from NeighborWorks America will help the North Country Housing Council with operating costs, technical assistance, and program marketing.
North Country Housing Council’s Executive Director Joseph DeMart said he is very grateful for NeighborWorks’ assistance.
“The Housing Council is pleased by NeighborWorks America’s continued confidence in our company’s long-standing ability to provide affordable housing opportunities to St. Lawrence County residents," DeMart said. "NeighborWorks' commitment is especially crucial in these trying economic times.”
“The need for nonprofit community development organizations and the work they do to stabilize communities, further economic development and create and sustain jobs has never been greater,” said Eileen Fitzgerald, acting CEO of NeighborWorks® America. “Communities are pressured by stubbornly high foreclosure rates and unemployment at a time when municipal and state budgets are stretched thin and private resources are scarce. This grant provides critical funding that strengthens the Housing Council’s ability to serve its communities, create jobs and contribute to economic growth.”
Since its incorporation in 1981, the local housing agency, until recently known as the St. Lawrence County Housing Council, has brought more than $50 million in public and private funds to bear on the housing and community revitalization needs of St. Lawrence County. The Housing Council has assisted 646 families in purchasing first homes, provided housing rehabilitation assistance for nearly 1,400 households, and has administered over $15,158,000 for community development projects for other non-profits and for local municipalities ranging from community centers to downtown revitalization and historical preservation projects.
North Country Housing Council is a private, not-for-profit organization that focuses on the housing needs of St. Lawrence County. They offer services such as First-Time Homebuyer Education, where applicants participate in 10 hours of classroom training; grant funding to rehabilitate a substandard home; a Community Development Division that writes and administers grants for municipalities and other non-profit organizations; and a Property Management Division that manages several rental properties, one of which contains 100 rental units.
