Norfolk Lions recognize seventh grade winners of peace poster contest

NORFOLK – Members of the Norfolk Lions Club gave recognition to three 7th grade winners of the local Lions International Peace Poster Contest, including one who went on to win the regional competition.

The local judging was concluded in November with recognition going to the following local winners: First place--Jayden Young; second place--Emily Thomas, and third place-Ellie Burns.

All three girls were students of Jason Hubbard, Norwood-Norfolk Central School middle school art teacher, who supervised the local competition.

All three winners won cash prizes and certificates and Jayden's winning poster was moved forward for additional competition at other levels within New York state.

Jayden's poster was selected as first place winner in district competition where she received another cash prize.

To reach that level, her poster competed against others from throughout seven counties in upstate New York.

In later statewide judging, a poster created by a Lake Luzerne 8th grader won the state contest and moves forward against further national competition.

The contest is sponsored each year by Lions Club International and is supervised locally by area Lions Clubs who coordinate with 6th, 7th or 8th grade art teachers to find students who wish to compete.

Students then create an original poster that depicts their feeling of the theme for the year. This year's theme was "Children Know Peace."

Involved in the assembly was Lion Donald Lustyik, Norfolk Lions President, and Lion

Royal Sheldon, local poster chairman for the Norfolk Lions. Jason Hubbard ,NNCS middle school art teacher was also present.
