CANTON - St. Lawrence County’s new risk manager made a visit to the municipal building June 16 night not only to introduce himself to the village board but to let village officials know he’s ready to assist with any workman’s compensation issues.

Jody Wenzel said his office will be contacting the village in the immediate future to perform a safety and compliance audit. The procedure will include a walk through of village facilities searching for potential hazards and safety issues. The audit will also take a look at proper postings and notices.

“If you have any question, use our office as a resource,” Wenzel said. “Any claims will go through out office.”

Wenzel said any violations or infractions will be shared solely between the village and his office. A report will be generated with a list of locations and what is needed to be addressed. Once the items are corrected, the mayor will send his report back to the risk manager.

“It’s better for me to find it before New York state finds it,” he said. “If you receive a notice for an inspection, I will drop everything and be there.”

Wenzel said the risk manager or compliance position has been vacant for three to four years. He noted his office will be serving every town in the county, excluding Colton and Piercefield, all villages and the city of Ogdensburg.

Mayor Michael Dalton said the county is trying to do their best to minimize claims.

“I see value in doing this. It’s another set of eyes coming in to take a look at things, see something we didn’t recognize and help minimize exposure in our workplaces,” said Dalton.
