CANTON — Further progress has been made for the new County Department of Highways facilities as county legislators took action during a full board meeting on Sept. 12.

Legislators passed a resolution to authorize a permanent easement with National Grid, clearing the way for the construction of utilities at the new facility in Potsdam.

“We have an easement on an adjacent property for the driveway and we’ll be following that new driveway in the parcel where the outpost is being constructed,” Highway Superintendent Don Chambers previously told legislators.

The new facility will be used for salt and sand storage for highway maintenance during the winter, as well as equipment storage, Chambers said.

Legislators also took action to begin authorizing contracts for the construction of a recycling facility at the Ogdensburg Transfer Station.

The move comes after the Development Authority of the North Country will no longer operate a recycling transfer station for the county.

Luck Bros. Inc, out of Plattsburgh, was selected as the contractor for the project and has entered into an agreement with the county on a contract not to exceed $1,551,500.

Watson Electric of Norwood was selected to fulfill the electrical contract that is to not exceed $95,100, officials said.

Construction and inspection services for the transfer station improvement project will be completed by Barton and Loguidice at a cost to not exceed $28,850.

That contract will be paid out of the fund balance from the solid waste department.

A modification to the 2022 budget for solid waste was also approved during the meeting.
